Our modular frames are constructed from H3.2 treated, Pinus Radiata timber which has a 50 year weather resistance. The modular panels are screwed, NOT nailed, with coated Lumberlok 80mm, corrosion resistant zinc screws, (as used for structural roof purlin fixing in New Zealand).
All windows and doors are made from Western Red Cedar, which has exceptional dimensional stability. This timber is hygroscopic, naturally absorbing and releasing moisture until it is in equilibrium with the surrounding atmosphere, therefore the species has a very low shrinkage factor. It is superior to all other coniferous woods in its resistance to warping, twisting and checking. Western Red Cedar makes an incredibly durable material for external use and one of its most valuable characteristics is its well-known high resistance to decay.
Door and window hardware is fitted using stainless steel screws, which are corrosion resistant. We use stainless steel, ball bearing hinges. Our Kew and Chelsea Garden Houses have 2 side window vents and 2 roof window vents.
Every Garden House is completed with galvanized steel spouting and chains, to channel water into your chosen water collector, (full and half wine barrels make attractive and effective water butts. They are available upon request).
The default colour for a Garden House is Resene Seafog white; however any Resene colour is possible at no extra cost, (although for custom paint finishes we request that a deposit is paid upon order, as we will not easily be able to re-sell a custom colour should you for some reason not wish to proceed). A reduction of $2,300 is available on all models for unpainted delivery.
Glass in a Garden House is clear, 4mm thick to the sides and door. The roof is glazed with 5mm Georgian wire glass, for safety and to control extreme sunlight. The panels in the gabled ends, above the door to front and in gabled roof space to the rear, are glazed with tinted or obscure 5mm glass. We prefer to use lightly coloured glass for this, (mauve, grey, tea, light jade), but there are many colour choices available.
With regard to shelving, workbench and storage, we have a variety of possibilities for you to consider, depending on your gardening needs, We are happy to recommend appropriate alternatives for each size of Garden House, and then build units to be easily assembled once your Garden House is installed. These internal options are just some of the extras that are available to you: we also make a wide range of planters, benches and traditional garden furniture and architecture, (with and without casters for ease of repositioning, on hard surfaces, to follow New Zealand's seasonal sun).
